Spoon – ‘Transference’

Band’s seventh album is as up-tempo and jaunty as ever.

Transference is Spoon’s seventh album, which came as a surprise to someone who only ever heard of them since 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Sure, I’m a musical imbecile, but I am learning. ‘The Mystery Zone’ has a kind of happy pulse to it; ‘Written in Reverse,’ is the album’s highlight and the record is fairly top-heavy with them. Transference doesn’t have a cracking, belting crowdpleaser like Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’s ‘The Underdog’ but as a whole piece, it’s smart, weird and wild. ‘Who Makes Your Money’ is fun, as is ‘Out Go the Lights,’ recalling the New Wave sound merged with a latter day soul sensibility. Transference is a solid package of the goods.
